To take after someone is to behave similarly to them or to look like them.
You take after someone in your family who is a generation older than you and in a sense you have inherited or they have given you these characteristics.
For example:
"When I watch my nephew playing with his friends it reminds me of my brother (his Dad) when he was his age. He definitely takes after his Dad in many ways."
Or you might say to a friend:
"Wow! When you said that you looked just like your Mum - you really take after her, you have the exact same mannerisms as her."
