I have been teaching English as a second language for over 15 years. I teach for more than the ability to pass an English exam, like the FCE or CAE. I teach English to help people succeed in life more than on a test. They both are important but totally different.
I prefer to start by understanding the goals my students want to achieve. I list the objectives clearly at the beginning of each lesson, I correct minor mistakes immediately and take notes for correction that require more explanation. This helps with fluency. I take time to stop within the lesson to then correct the mistakes which have been made. Each lesson I keep a google document to send my students afterward. It looks like this:
Vocab and Pronunciation: -get up/wake up, ? -think about -take care of -need -have to(hafta) (hasta)= Pronunciation ex. She has to/hasta get up early on Wednesdays for the weekly meeting at 8am.
Grammar: -past tenses of phrasal verbs/ conjugation of semi-modal verbs, need and have to: ex. I got up this morning and I thought about all the things I needed to do. -use of gerund(ING) after preposition: ex. I thought about makING coffee but I woke up too late and .....
After the presentation is practice on the the part of the student!
So trust me I listen to my students and plan lessons based on their needs. I do a lot of revision of past lessons and plan a future, when you won´t need me anymore, hopefully!
