May, might and could are all ways of saying that something is possible but you don't know for sure.
This is the order I would place them in, talking about why your friend has not arrived:
COULD = least sure: He could be asleep = it's just a guess, you don't know him well enough, he could equally be playing football or visiting his mother
MAY = a bit more sure: He may be asleep = you know a bit about his habits, it's quite possible
MIGHT = more sure: He might be asleep = you know he sleeps at this time, it's likely.
