I like to put a lot of emphasis on practice and then integrate more theory as the students progress. This allows students to see (and hear!) that they have progressed which motivates them to work harder and practice more often.
I tend to cover:
- Basic Notation
- Basic Rhythm
- Basic Open Chord Shapes
- Basic Music Theory
- Beginner Strumming Patterns
- Intermediate Strumming Patterns
- Intermediate Chord Shape
- Picking and alternate picking
- A lot of practice with popular songs (depending on the student's preferred genre)
I offer my students extra materials (chord diagrams and backing tracks) each lesson to compliment the learning material with both visual and auditory references.
The experience is a lot less formal than others because I will very likely be closer in age to many of my students. This makes it easier to communicate and connect with regards to contemporary music tastes and preferences.
All you need is a guitar and the curiosity and willingness to try something new!
