So you're going to study abroad and you need the TOEFL?

The first thing you should know about the TOEFL is that it's not just an English exam, it's also an exam that tests several other skills. Which makes sense, because universities don't just need you to have an abstract level of English, they want you to have the skills necessary to use that English in an academic environment.

In my classes, as well as working on your English level, we develop those skills. They are:

Summarising Skills:
In all four sections of the exam your ability to summarise a lot of academic information down to a small amount of information, or your ability to accurately differentiate good summaries from bad summaries, will be tested.

Analytical Skills:
Especially in the reading section, the questions are very precise and demand a sharp, analytical mind. Approximate, more or less answers don't cut it on the TOEFL.

Concentration:
The TOEFL is very demanding on your abilities to focus and concentrate. Unfortunately we live in a time when smartphones are destroying those abilities in lots of people. If they have destroyed yours, I can help you build them back.

Writing:
Usually my students not only have to improve how they write in English, but also how they think about writing in general. In school essays as long as you use some connector words and phrases in every paragraph your teacher will give you a good mark, but that's not how writing works in the real world or in the TOEFL.

It sounds like a lot of work, but don't worry, most of my students get their mark with only 10-12 classes, sometimes far less.

Also, the TOEFL is a fun exam to prepare. You learn about topics from across the entire spectrum of university disciplines. Which is how the TOEFL is also great for training you in another key life skill: curiosity. Be curious about every text in the exam and immediately your chance of getting your mark have gone up significantly.
