Carlos Cabrera

Hi! I’m Carlos, a bilingual English-Spanish teacher, writer and professional translator based in Barcelona.

I was born and raised in Los Angeles and have lived in Barcelona for many years, so I understand both the linguistic and cultural differences that English speakers encounter when learning Spanish or Catalan. I’m bilingual in English and Spanish and speak Catalan at a professional level, which means I can explain grammar, vocabulary and expressions clearly in English when necessary rather than leaving you wondering why something works the way it does.

I have more than 10 years of experience in teaching, languages and writing. I hold an MFA in Writing from the University of San Francisco and a BA in English from UCLA, and I have taught language, literature and creative writing in both academic and private settings.

My classes are completely adapted to your level, interests and goals. Depending on what you need, we can work on:

I especially enjoy working with students who understand quite a lot but find it difficult to speak confidently. My goal is to get you using the language as much as possible during the lesson, while giving you the grammar and vocabulary you need to communicate more naturally.

For intermediate and advanced students, I also use authentic materials such as articles, videos, short stories, podcasts and other real-world content. This allows us to go beyond textbook Spanish or Catalan and work with the language people actually use.

Lessons are structured, but they are never rigid. I adapt the material as we go depending on your progress, interests and the areas where you need the most support.
