I use different methods for different students and/or content. I approach most classes with the simple but highly effective PPP method of Presenting the material, Practicing given piece and then Producing it through speaking, writing etc etc.
However, all students are different and their needs too, so if it`s conversation they want I will focus on functions of English building vocabulary and fluency.
I use video and song, listening exercises targeted at specific levels and also actual exam practice exercises.
When it comes to exam prep I do whatever I feel is necessary whether it is to do more listening exercises or writing structure etc.
I try to build learner autonomy and make them proactive in their journey.
Some students need or actually thrive on strict planned classes whereas others need a more relaxed approach. I feel I can identify this quickly because of my broad range of experience.
Business classes tend to be more function based, building vocabulary for specific job related communication, but business students can also thrive from level based, targeted classes.
And then there`s good old conversation. From just getting to know the student to focused based grammar questions. It truly can lead to so many instances of learning. I think this type of learning can be really beneficial as the learner tends to go down the road that interests them and thus the vocabulary and grammar touched upon will be more easily remembered and I like to revise these points of interest regularly.
