The majority of students see writing as a daunting and burdensome task that must be completed in order to me scrutinized and graded. As a writing tutor, my personal goal is to show my students how they can turn writing into their most powerful tool in life. As such, while I focus on the assignments the students bring, I try to demonstrate how writing is a student's voice, and how it is an important tool they must master in order to achieve their personal, professional and academic goals.

In order to help students master the tool of writing, I focus on clarity. Having brilliant ideas is useless if you cannot clearly communicate them to other people. To improve clarity, I work students through the overarching structure in their writing, be it an academic essay, a lab report or a project proposal. Once a solid understanding of the overall structure is in place, I work through the structure and organization of each part of a text. By breaking down each section, paragraph and sentence, the student and I can begin to understand what is most important to them and if their readers will understand to understand their ideas and nuances clearly. If the structure of the student's writing is sound, then we move on to the development of style to really draw in the reader. This gives me a chance to support my student as they find their voice as a writer, which is my favourite part of this job.

La mayoría de los alumnos con los que trabajo suelen ver el escribir como un labor tortuoso que solo es asignado para que sea criticado y calificado. Como un tutor de escribir en Ingles, mi meta personal con cada cliente es hacer que vean el escribir no cómo una tortura si no como una poderosa herramienta sue pueden usar por la vida. Como tal, me enfoco en demostrarles a mis clientes que lo que escriben es una extension de su voz, y por lo tanto es una herramienta muy important para la vida personal, profesional y académica.

Para ayudar a mis alumnos a dominar la herramienta de escritura, mi primer enfoque es la claridad de un texto. Tener ideas brillantes no es util si no puedes comunicarlas claramente a otras personas. Para mejorar la claridad, empiezo por revisar la estructura general de un texto, ya sea un ensayo, un reporte final o una propuesta de proyecto. Una vez que se tiene una sólida comprensión de la estructura general, trabajo a través de la estructura y organización de cada parte de un texto. Al desglosar cada sección, párrafo y oración, el alumno y yo podemos comenzar a comprender qué es lo más importante para ellos y si sus lectores comprenderán sus ideas y matices claramente. Si la estructura de la escritura del estudiante es sólida, entonces pasamos al desarrollo del estilo para realmente atraer al lector. Esto me da la oportunidad de apoyar a mis alumnos a medida que encuentran su voz como escritor, lo cual es mi parte favorita de este trabajo.
