The 'wake' is the water that has been disturbed by the forward movement of a boat. It is behind the boat.
In the song it is used figuratively in a solemn, poetic way to describe something/ someone that has been left behind or is no longer considered part of the present or future.
That's what it sounds like to me, anyway.
Youll often see it used like - 'in the wake of + something negative'
E.g. 'There was only debris and damaged houses in the wake of the hurricane."
Or "in the wake of the divorce, all he was left with was his drum kit." Lol.
