Dear Hiring Manager,

I am writing to express my sincere interest in your English Teaching Position.

My name is Marimar Velaz, and I'm from Tampa, Florida.

I have 3 years of teaching experience and a Master’s in Applied Linguistics with a focus on Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. While completing my master’s degree, I worked at INTO University of South Florida teaching grammar to low-level language learners. My students were participating in this English language program to improve their TOEFL score and eventually pursue a college degree in the United States. I had students from China, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea.

After graduating, I began working full time at a non-profit helping high school students with their college application process. The majority of the students in my caseload were ESL learners from Latin America. Also, I was teaching Academic English to adults in the evenings at Hillsborough Community College. In April of 2019, I was offered the opportunity to start working at a new Catholic high school in Tampa that serves low-income students in the community. My role focused on helping students in their college application process as our mission was for every student to break the cycle of poverty by obtaining a bachelor’s degree and pursuing a professional career.

As a College and Career Counselor, I was frequently translating information from Spanish to English and vice versa because more than half of our student population spoke Spanish at home. I would sit in meetings with our administration and staff to translate conversations and would facilitate meetings in Spanish for our families.

Through my experiences, I believe that I have gained the necessary skills to be successful in the role for which I’m applying. I have experience in working with students from a wide range of backgrounds, socioeconomic status, first languages, and cultures. Thank you for your time and consideration.
