I have a wide range of teaching experience with younger students when I was in high school for English learners (ASL mostly). My methods have always been on personality and comfort with my student or the person I am teaching. This could start with a lesson based on conversation about the persons day and slowly introducing new words to the conversation but testing but the previous knowledge of the words taught before. This will create a journey between the student and I based on conversation journeys until the end which will get us to know each other better as well as learn better.
