Hoy en día, tener fluidez en Inglés es algo que cada vez más colegios, universidades y empresas están exigiendo a alumnos, profesores y empleados.
Y este fenómeno está presionando mucho a la población española, porque la famosa frase: “Nivel de Inglés: intermedio” que la gente solía mencionar en sus currículums o en entrevistas de trabajo ya no vale. ¿Por qué? Porque cada vez más empresas usan la lengua inglesa para establecer relaciones de negocio internacionales y necesitan que sus empleados realmente demuestren su nivel de Inglés escrito y hablado y porque un nivel intermedio de Inglés ya no es suficiente en los tiempos que corren. Lo siento, pero ésa es la verdad.
Así que, ahora, tenemos una amplia variedad de exámenes que podemos hacer y títulos o certificados que podemos conseguir para probar nuestro nivel real de conocimiento de la lengua inglesa. Para todos los niveles y edades. Me centraré en algunos exámenes de la Universidad de Cambridge y en el TOEIC.
Los exámenes de Cambridge son algunos de los exámenes más famosos que se esta´n preparando en colegios y en academias privadas. Hay diferentes niveles, desde el más bajo hasta el más alto, así como diferentes tipos: para Inglés general, Inglés de negocios, etc. Los más famosos son aquéllos para Inglés general aunque los otros también están ganando cada vez más atención e importancia. Los exámenes que yo quiero mencionar son: Starters, Movers, Flyers (especialmente diseñados para niños) y KET, PET, FIRST, CAE (Advanced) y CPE (Proficiency) que tratan sobre temas más apropiados para adultos. Sin embargo, como el nivel de Inglés está aumentando entre los niños y la gente joven debido a la aparición de colegos bilingües y la necesidad de ser capaz de hablar inglés en una sociedad globalizada, la Universidad de Cambridge creó KET for Schools, PET for Schools y FIRST for Schools. Estos exámenes tienen el mismo nivel de dificultad que los normales KET, el PET y FIRST, pero tarbajan con temas que son más apropriados y atractivos para niños y adolescentes.
¿Cuál es la equivalencia entre los exámenes de Cambridge y los niveles del MCER (Marco Común Europeo de Referencia para las lenguas? Starters es Pre-A1, Movers es A1 and Flyers es A2. Estos 3 niveles están dentro del grupo YLE (Young Learners of English: Jóvenes aprendices de Inglés); KET es A2; PET es B1; FIRST es B2; CAE (Avanzado) es C1 y CPE (Certificado de Maestría en Inglés) es C2.

El TOEIC (Test de Inglés para la Comunicación Internacional) es un examen diseñado por el ETS (Servicio para la Evaluación Educacional) una empresa norteamericana de Princeton (Nueva Jersey) y es un examen que usan compañías muy importantes para medir el nivel de Inglés de sus empleados. Los temas están relacionados con el ambiente del trabajo y los certificados son sólo válidos durante 2 años ya que el ETS dice que el nivel de Inglés de una persona puede cambiar con el tiempo. De esta manera, los trabajadores necesitan continuar practicando, estudiando y repasando para mantener o mejorar su conocimiento de la lengua inglesa.

Nowadays, being fluent in English is something that more and more schools, universities and companies are demanding from students, teachers and employees.
And this phenomenon is putting a lot of pressure on the Spanish population as the famous statement: “Intermediate level of English” that people used to mention in their cvs or at job interviews is not vaild any more. Why? Because more and more companies use the English language to establish international business relations and they need their employees to really show their level of written and spoken English and because an Intermediate level of English is not enough in this day and age. I’m sorry but that is the truth.
So, at present, we have a wide variety of exams that we can take and certificates that we can get in order to prove our real knowledge of the English language. For all levels and ages. I will focus on some exams from Cambridge University and the TOEIC.
Cambridge exams are some of the most popular exams that are being prepared in schools and in private academies. There are different levels, from the lowest to the highest as well as different types: for general English, business English, etc. The most famous ones are those for general English although the others are also gaining more and more attention and importance. The tests that I want to mention are: Starters, Movers, Flyers (specially designed for children) and: KET, PET, FIRST, CAE (Advanced) and CPE (Proficiency), which deal with topics that are more suitable for adults. However, as the level of English is increasing among children and young people due to the appearance of bilingual schools and the necessity to be able to speak English in a globalised society, the University of Cambridge created Ket for Schools, PET for Schools and FIRST for Schools. This exams have the same level of difficulty as the normal KET, PET and FIRST but they work with topics that are more appropriate and attractive for kids and teenagers.
What is the equivalence between the Cambridge exams and the CEF (Common European Framework) levels? Starters equals Pre-A1, Movers equals A1 and Flyers equals A2. These 3 levels are inside the group YLE (Young Learners of English); KET equals A2; PET equals B1; FIRST equals B2; CAE (Advanced) equals C1 and CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) equals C2.

The TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) is an exam designed by the ETS (Educational Testing Service) a North American company from Princeton (New Jersey) and this exam is used by very important companies to measure the level of English of their employees. The topics are related to the work environment and the certificates are only valid for 2 years as the ETS says that a person’s level of English can change with the time. This way, the employees need to continue practising, studying and revising in order to maintain or improve their knowledge of the English language.
