In 1986 in the United States, “Ms.” became popular and accepted after The New York Times published that it would begin using the term “Ms” instead of Miss or Mrs.
Miss means unmarried. It is now considered old-fashioned and sexist by many as it defines women by their (lack of) marital status, when men are not defined by this status.
Reasoning:
- If we do not distinguish men as married or unmarried why should we distinguish women as single or married? Whose business is it to know?
- Mr. and Ms. is what has been used for decades. At least since the 80’s.
- Exceptions:
- Girls can still be referred to as Miss. But 18 or older should be addressed as Ms.
- Some much older married or widowed women (over 60) might still prefer Mrs., but would not be offended by being referred to as Ms.
