I’m a native English teacher and have been teaching English in Spain for almost 11 years. During that time, I’ve worked with students from a wide range of backgrounds and with different goals, always focusing on helping them use English confidently and naturally in real communication.
I believe learning English is much more effective when you have something interesting and useful to talk about. My classes are therefore built around specific topics and situations. We first introduce the vocabulary and expressions you need, and then put them into practice through constant interaction and conversation. Rather than studying isolated words or grammar exercises, the aim is to build useful language and actually use it.
Topics range from everyday situations such as shopping, renting a car in the US, making small talk, asking for information, giving advice, making appointments and dealing with everyday problems, to more advanced subjects such as healthcare in the US and Spain, social issues, immigration and integration, social media, education, the workplace, and differences between Spanish and American lifestyles. The goal is always to acquire useful vocabulary, then question it, discuss it and make it your own.
I also offer Business English, drawing on my background as an economist.
A key part of my methodology is introducing topic-specific language before the conversation begins. For example, when discussing business performance, we might work with expressions such as meet a target, boost sales, cut costs, increase revenue, launch a product or enter a new market, as well as phrasal verbs such as carry out an analysis, set up a company, take over a business or bring up an issue. We then use this language in questions, role-plays and discussions. Vocabulary becomes something you actively use, not simply memorize.
Conversation is always at the heart of my classes. Students therefore have constant opportunities not only to answer questions, but to formulate their own, react to what I say, challenge ideas, express opinions, explain their reasoning and keep a conversation going. My students also enjoy discussing films and series in English. Watching them in the original helps develop listening skills, pronunciation, intonation, connected speech, musicality and familiarity with different accents. The goal is to use English confidently, naturally and spontaneously.
