Para empezar, como profesora de inglés, os contaré que son los números ordinales y los números ordinales, para posteriormente, saber cómo utilizarlos.
- Los números ordinales (primero, segundo, tercero...) son adjetivos que hablan sobre la posición de algo con respecto a otra cosa. Por ejemplo: Soy el primero en sacar un 10 en inglés de mi familia.
- Los números cardinales (unos, dos, tres...) son adjetivos que nos hablan de la cantidad de algo. Por ejemplo: Tengo 3 hermanos.
¿Cuándo utilizamos los números ordinales y cardinales en inglés?
Utilizamos los números ordinales para hablar de posiciones y para las fechas en inglés.
Ejemplo 1: 'January 4, 2024' esta fecha sería 'January fourth, twenty twenty-four'.
Ejemplo 2: 'List of students: Jose, Fernando, Raquel and Gregorio' '¿Where is Raquel? Raquel is the second one on the list.'
¿Cómo formamos los números ordinales en inglés?
Todos los números ordinales utilizan un sufijo: -st, -nd, -rd, o -th. Los tres primeros números no siguen ninguna regla. No son difíciles y el hecho de que sean diferentes tal vez haga que se te queden mejor:
- First (1st)
- Second (2nd)
- Third (3rd)
El resto de números sigue una regla muy sencilla, añadir -th al final del número cardinal para obtener el número ordinal. De esta manera, six (seis) pasaría a sixth (sexto). Estas son algunas transformaciones de números cardinales a ordinales:
- Four - Fourth
- Five - Fifth
- Six - Sixth
- Seven - Seventh
- Eight - Eighth
- Nine - Ninth
- Ten - Tenth
¡Cuidado! Hay algunos cambios en el spelling de ciertos números:
- Five - Fifth
- Nine - Ninth
- Twelve - Twelfth
Todos los números redondos (20, 30, 40, 50... hasta el 90 incluído) se escribirán de la siguiente manera:
- Twenty - Twentieth
- Thirty - Thirtieth
- Forty - Fortieth
- Fifty - Fiftieth
- Sixty - Sixtieth
- Seventy - Seventieth
- Eighty - Eightieth
- Ninety - Ninetieth
¿Y cómo se diría vigésimo primero en inglés?
Para consolidar las ideas, vamos a hacer un ejemplo con los números del 19 al 30.
- 19 Nineteen - Nineteenth
- 20 Twenty - Twentieth
- 21 Twenty-one - Twenty-first
- 22 Twenty-two - Twenty-second
- 23 Twenty-three - Twenty-third
- 24 Twenty-four - Twenty-fourth
- 25 Twenty-five - Twenty-fifth
- 26 Twenty-six - Twenty-sixth
- 27 Twenty-seven - Twenty-seventh
- 28 Twenty-eight - Twenty-eighth
- 29 Twenty-nine - Twenty-ninth
- 30 Thirty - Thirtieth
Así se haría con todos los números. Fíjate en los cambios en el spelling del cinco y del nueve, que se mantienen. También recordemos que para el vigésimo primero, vigésimo segundo y vigésimo tercero hay que utilizar first, second and third.
Te muestro cómo serían los números ordinales a partir del noventa y nueve:

- One thousand five hundred, or fifteen hundred - One thousand five hundredth

Otra cosa a tener en cuenta es que en inglés, cuando no quieres escribir la frase tipo 'septuagésimo cuarto - seventy-fourth' puedes indicar que es un número ordinal escribiendo el número seguido de su sufijo corespondiente. Recordemos que los sufijos eran -st, -nd, -rd, o -th.
De esta manera tendríamos:
- 1st - First
- 2nd - Second
- 3rd - Third
- 11th - Eleventh
- 85th - Eighty-fifth
- 92nd - Ninety-second
