Teaching children of the 7-9 year old group

Children can be divided into 2 main age groups: 4-6 and 7-9 years old. In the following article we are going to learn about the 7-9-year-old kids, who are already studying at school and have the basic knowledge of English and lesson’s discipline. They are more patient and resistant to having long studying hours like in school. Therefore, the optimal lesson’s length for this age group is from 40 to 50 minutes (2 times per week).

Along with patience on the lessons, children of this age have already formed its’ own interests and positions. They start to base their perception on their own opinion, they have a little bit less imagination.

This age group can make logical connections between current and past actions. What is also important, they seek support from adults if they fail and see everything in black and white (bad and good). That’s why it is essential to correct their mistakes very carefully to avoid demotivation. Sometimes it is better to leave one grammar construction with a mistake, than a child losing willingness to speak.

With children of 7-9 years old it is possible to use the same instruments of learning, like with 4-6 years old kids. However, this age group tends to become more serious. In this case it is better not to push them dancing with you and a puppet, if they don’t feel like doing it.

Children of this age are able to conduct analysis and synthesis. The rules of the games may already become more complicated and interactive. A teacher can help children to “Think out of the box” – give them more freedom (make new rules of the game) and show that if in the task they made a mistake, it doesn’t mean that they won’t be understood in real life.

To conclude, I would like to mention that there is a difference between mistakes and errors, which teachers need to be aware of to increase the motivation of children of this age group. Errors can’t be corrected by students, because they doesn’t know the rule, yet. A "mistake" happens when the learner uses the known system or rule in a wrong way. So, if the students commits an error it is better to let him talk further, without highlining the new grammar structure.
