Anyone who has never made a mistake when learning English...

The first thing I always ask my students is permission to correct their mistakes and if they want me to correct as we go through the lesson or if they want me to correct at the end of the lesson.

Here are two of the most common mistakes I have found that most students have

Make and do!

Oh you know this one! From beginners to advanced students make and do always cause problem.

In its simplest terms make is for something that you create. For example make a cake, make a sandwich, make the dinner.

Do is for actions. For example, do your homework, do the gardening, do a good job.

However things now get complicated as do you:

make a decision or do a decision?

make time to meet someone or do time to meet someone?

make business with someone or do business with someone?

make an appointment or do an appointment?

Complicated right?

In general you will need to use make and do as explained above and then get to know the exceptions

Pronunciation of words beginning with S

Another common mistake I see that students have. Many Spanish speakers will prouncne words beginning with S as ES. For example I went to eSchool to eStudy English. Instead they should say the S as a long sound.

In conclusion

These are fairly common issues that all Spanish language learners that I have worked with have, but once they realise their mistakes, they don’t make/do them again!

Until next time
