Hello everybody! How is everything going? Personally, if we stop thinking about terrorist attacks, I am very happy because summer is coming, the sun is out the majority of days, my toes are out as well in my new sandals and also new ideas for my articles come out of my mind. For example, this week, I have planned to share with you some expressions and abbreviations/acronyms that I have learnt after spending a lot of ours reading news, talking with people, watching films, series, programmes, youtube vlogs (video blogs), and also after reading blogs, instagrams, etc. The sources are varied, but, as I have mentioned in other posts, my favorite series are Friends, How I met your mother and The Big Bang Theory, among others; my favorite blogs to read in English are Jillian Harris, IntheFrow and Hannah Maggs; I also read their instagrams as their photos are great! And regarding youtube vlogs, at the end of this article, I will let you know some new ones that I have started watching and these people also have instagram accounts worth following! Well, let’s get down to business now. Maybe you know a lot of expressions from these, but others may be new to you. Try to guess the meaning by reading the definitions and then check if your guessing was correct by scrolling down to the Spanish version of this article.
- bits and bobs: little things, in general, or small chores that you have to do
- dibs!: when there is little amount of something and you say you want it or simply when you see something that you want.
- how come?: you ask this when you are surprised about something that someone has previously said.
- babe, babes: a colloquial word that can have different meanings, but it is always affectionate, girls call their friends and also partners “babes” and also boys call their partners this. A more slang variety would be “bitch”, “bitches”, but not used in an offensive way. You can use it when joking with your friends in the same way as boys call each other names in affectionate way, in a familiar context. The terms “chick” and “bird” to call girls may be considered offensive. One type of literature that is liked specially by girls is “chick-lit” with titles such as Bridget Jones’s Diary and the like. However, I am a fan of this type of lit indeed.
- mate, pal, lad (British English) and buddy (American English) to refer to boys/men.
- mocktail: it is a mock (fake) cocktail which has no alcohol. It may be have all the ingredients of a cocktail except the spirits. A delicious option for very healthy people.
- the bee’s knees / the cream of the crop: the very best.
- the teacher’s pet: the teacher’s favorite student.
- to go bananas / to go nuts: to go crazy
- what a bummer!: you say this when something is boring
- go off the beaten track/path: you do this when you travel and explore areas that are not typically visited by tourists. It can also be used in a metaphorical way when talking about other things just to refer to doing different things or in a different way from the rest of the people
- what have you been up to recently?: what have you been doing recently?
- to be away on vacay/ to need some vacay away: To be out of the city on vacation/holiday/to need holiday
Abbreviations/acronyms
They are more and more common in all languages, I suppose. I will start with some of them which are more formal and which appear in the news, on many webpages, etc, and I will continue with more informal ones:
- USA: United States of America
- EU: European Union
- UNO: United Nations Organisation
- NATO: North Atlantic Treaty Organisation
- NGO: Non-Governmental Organisation
- AIDS: Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome
- FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions
- Q&A: Questions and Answers
- OMG!: Oh my God!
- LOL: laugh out loud
- FYI: for your information
- BTW: By the Way
I could give you more expressions and acronyms but, let’s leave some of them for another post, ok?

¡Hola a tod@s! ¿Cómo va todo? Personalmente, si dejamos de pensar un momento en los ataques terroristas, yo estoy muy feliz porque el verano está llegando, el sol sale la mayoría de los días, mis ñoños (dedos de los pies) también salen en mis nuevas sandalias y también salen de mi mente nuevas ideas para mis artículos. Por ejemplo, esta semana, he planeado compartir con vosotr@s algunas expresiones y abreviaturas/acrónimos que he aprendido después de pasar muchas horas leyendo noticias, hablando con gente, viendo películas, series, programas, vlogs (video logs) en youtube, y también, después de leer blogs, instagrams, etc. Las fuentes son variadas, pero, como he mencionado en otros posts, mis series favoritas son Friends, Cómo conocí a vuestra madre, The Big Bang theory, entre otras; mis blogs favoritos para leer en Inglés son Jillian Harris, IntheFrow y Hannah Maggs; también leo sus instagrams ¡porque sus fotos son geniales! Y en lo que respecta a vlogs de youtube, al final de este artículo, os diré de algunos nuevos que he empezado a ver y esta gente también tiene cuentas de instagram que merece la pena seguir. Bueno, vamos meternos en faena ahora. Quizá ya conozcáis muchas expresiones de éstas pero otras pueden ser nuevas para vosotr@s. Intentad adivinar el significado leyendo las definiciones y luego comprobad si vuestras suposiciones eran correctas bajando a la versión española de este artículo.

- babe, babes: cariño/s, nena/s, nene/s, novia/o. Una palabra coloquial que puede tener diferentes signicados, pero que siempre es cariñosa, las chicas llaman a sun amigas y también a sus parejas “babes” y también los chicos llaman a sus parejas así. Una variedad más de jerga sería “bitch”, “bitches” (perras) pero dicho sin intención de ofender, lo podéis decir bromeando con vuestras amigas, igual que los chicos también se llaman de todo cariñosamente, en un contexto familiar. Los términos “chick” (pollita) and “bird” (pajarita) para llamar a las chicas pueden ser vistos como ofensivos. Un tipo de literatura que les gusta, sobre todo a las chicas, es la “chick-lit” con títulos como El diario de Bridget Jones y similares. Sin embargo, soy, de hecho, una fan de este tipo de literatura.

Son cada vez más comunes en todos los idiomas, supongo. Empezaré por algunos que son más formales y que aparecen en las noticias, en muchas páginas web, etc y continuaré con otros más informales:
