Keeping ourselves happy and busy during boredom

Boredom is natural. Boredom is healthy. In fact, when we are bored, our brain is forced to start thinking for itself, instead of constantly being exposed to all the information that we get through TV screens, our phones etc.

Some of my favourite things that I love doing when I’m bored is:

1. Cooking. Or baking. A good chocolate chip cookie can brighten my mood, and make me feel a whole lot better. It's even better when I am preparing these delicious treats with someone else! Team work makes the dream work, they say.

2. Reading a good book. Reading books are one of the many ways where we can completely relaxed and block out the noisy world around us. We can often dive into intricate fantasies and amazing stories, which make us forget our worries and our problems. There are so many books out there, both online and in paper-copy form, in so many genres. Pick one up and start reading, you will be surprised!

3. Working out. It’s okay if you don’t go to the gym. It's okay if you can’t run a marathon. There are plenty of exercises that we can do at home, or outside that don’t require you to be a fitness guru! Exercise of any form gets the blood pumping around our bodies and our brains, and fills us with endorphins! These happiness hormones boost our mood and make us feel better. You can even go on a nice walk. Go on, you know you want to try it out!

4. Listen to podcasts. Now getting back to more the technology side, podcasts are amazing to listen to while you are carrying out your normal everyday activities. I play podcasts in Spanish to help me learn while I cook, clean, work in the garden etc. Podcasts can help you learn a language without noticing that you are doing it! You can also learn about interesting topics and discussions, which is always entertaining.

5. Watch Netflix. I love Netflix. There is nothing wrong with sitting down sometimes, with a hot drink and a nice chocolate cookie you just baked, ready to relax and watch the world around you disappear. A good movie or a good show can definitely keep you entertained for hours!
