Many Spaniards started learning a lot of grammar rules, tenses and very complex things. The problem is that when they leave high school, they have very poor English. So the question is: is grammar really important to speak? On the one hand, for oral speech it is not really necessary, since everything is reduced to a few words and expressions that are commonly used. In my view, these expressions should rather be taught by imitation, like when we were children. When it comes to speaking in a casual way, we do not do it with too complicated words or structures. I think that for more complex structures that are used typically in writing, it would be a good idea to give a grammar explanation.

The truth is that, when communicating something, we do not need to do it very difficult. We can express what we need in many different ways without having to focus on form so much, because the important thing is the meaning. In my view it is more useful to learn things naturally than to memorize hundreds of rules. In other words, if we as teachers are passionate about grammar, that is fine. Language experts can learn everything they want about grammar, syntax and semantics if they like it. However, our students want to learn how to communicate and for them grammar is boring.
